How Do Industrial Steamers Work?

Industrial steamers clean using only water heated to steam. The steam temperature needs to be at least 175 degrees Fahrenheit; for some applications, it needs to be above 212 degrees and even up to 325 degrees for greater effectiveness. Industrial steamers use electricity or diesel for power, depending on your cleaning needs and mobility requirements.

When water heats to high temperatures, it generates steam. Because water expands as it becomes a gas, the expansion accelerates the water out of the nozzle. While steam typically wants to dissipate in all directions, the nozzle on the steam cleaner channels the steam at high pressure to the desired area. The closer the head of the nozzle is to the target area, the higher the heat and steam pressure applied to the surface and the deeper the results.

The steam penetrates the material you’re disinfecting, killing pathogenic microbes and removing grease, dirt, and grime. One of the most significant advantages of industrial steam cleaning is steam’s ability to penetrate hard-to-reach cracks and crevices that could harbor dangerous bacteria and make your customers sick.

Why Are Industrial Steamers So Effective?

Using harsh chemicals to clean equipment has some significant drawbacks. Components in the cleaners are often detrimental to employee and customer health, and the cost of water and the runoff that carries away the chemicals is unsustainable.

Industrial steamers have a host of benefits over traditional cleaning methods:

  • Use less water

  • Cause no chemical runoff

  • Remove stains, grease, and pathogens

  • Use them anywhere

  • Eco-friendly

  • Safe for workers and customers

  • No detergent cost

What Can Industrial Steamers Clean?

One of the beauties of industrial steamers is that they clean almost anything without damage. They use little water, and you can adjust the pressure for light-to-heavy-duty cleaning jobs. Here are a few of the materials you can clean with steam:

  • Leather, plastic, and fabric

  • Stainless steel

  • Tile and grout

  • Wine barrels

  • Bottling lines

  • Conveyor belts

  • Food processing equipment

How Effective are Industrial Steamers?

There’s nothing like science to put the effectiveness of industrial steamers to the test. An independent laboratory in Anaheim, California, tested steam’s effectiveness against the typical pathogens in food on the most common surfaces.

An Optima steamer eliminated a range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Campylobacter coli from stainless steel after eight seconds of cleaning. It completely removed two wine spoilage microbes and E. coli from several surfaces.

No Drainage Needed

One of the beauties of “dry steam” is that the super-heated steam evaporates, leaving little to no runoff. Consider the alternative. In the past, it took harsh chemicals and lots of water to clean and sanitize food or beverage production equipment, and the runoff had to go somewhere.

Dry steam removes the runoff issue and the chemical load that would go into the water supply. Water heated to steam is all you need to clean and sanitize your industrial production equipment.

Easy Operation

Hotsy Carlson carefully selects Contigo and Optima industrial steamers for their quality and efficient, easy-to-handle designs. Even the largest models are easy to handle and simple to maintain, and water tanks have maximum capacity so you have to refill them less often.

Cleaning vs. Sanitizing

Cleaning removes the dirt and grime you can see and sanitizing removes things you can’t. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw a surge in sanitization efforts in offices, homes, businesses, and stores. While the demand for sanitization has settled down a bit, it is still higher than before the pandemic.

The beauty of an industrial steam cleaner is that it cleans and sanitizes simultaneously. In addition, dirt, grime, and bacteria add odors that can transfer into food and beverages on improperly cleaned production equipment. Cleaning and sanitizing in one efficient pass removes the agents that can add foreign tastes or smells.

Often businesses use “deodorizers” to give the illusion that a place is clean. However, deodorizers only mask smells caused by grime, dirt, and hard traffic through an area. These deodorizers are chemicals, and they don’t remove the cause of the smell. They can backfire because many people are repulsed by or even allergic to chemical perfumes and fragrances.

When you use steam to remove the dirt and pathogens that cause the odors, even in hard-to-reach areas, you reach an extreme level of cleanliness, and your customers will thank you.
